POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

1. No food tonight, only water. You can start their food up tomorrow. Usually they should not be very hungry due to the anesthetic.

2. Keep them in a warm safe place. If they are an outdoor animal they must be kept indoors at least for tonight. They will not be able to regulate their body temperature well for at least 24 hours due to the anesthetic.

3. Make sure to limit their activity at least for tonight. Do not allow them to try to go up or down stairs or on/off furniture to avoid injury. Due to the anesthetic they may not be able to maneuver properly and we do not want them to fall and get hurt.

4. If your pet has stitches and they will need to be removed in 2 weeks from the day of surgery. You will not have to make an appointment to have them removed, just call and make sure someone is at the office when you come in. There is NO charge for stitch removal. If your animal is due for vaccination at stitch removal time you WILL need to make an appointment.

5. If you need to contact us for any reason our phone number is: 304-296-1667. If it is after hours, please call: North Central West Virginia Veterinary Emergency Clinic at 304-363-2227. They can also provide additional help if needed.

6. The sedative administered to your pet will have lasting pain relief for 8-12 hours. Pain management is determined based on the procedure done and the appropriate medication has been sent if necessary for continued relief. All patients have received pain medicine during the procedure which typically last 18-36 hours post procedure. If your pet is showing a large amount of discomfort, please contact us and we can send medications as needed.
